The NSERC Postgraduates Scholarship-Doctoral provides financial assistance to high-caliber Student who engage in an eligible doctoral program in natural sciences. This support enables scholars to focus more on their studies and discover the best research mentors in their chosen field both within Canada & Abroad.
Automatically, applications to the PGS D program will be considered for the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS D) award. If your application happens to be one of the highest-scored applications, you will be offered a CGS D award; if your application is among the next tier of meritorious applications, you will be offered a PGS D award. Then, if your application is one of the lower scored applications, you will not be offered an award.

Application deadline via The University of British Columbia: Friday, 13 September 2024 at 12:00 pm PT.
Graduate program nomination deadline to Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies: Friday, 11 October 2024 at 4:00 pm PT.

Who are the NSERC
The NSERC, also know as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada are responsible for funding visionaries, explorers and innovators who research for the scientific and technical discoveries that will benefit the country
They are known to be Canada’s largest supporter of discovery and innovation. The NSERC operates with universities, colleges, businesses and not-for-profits to pull out barriers, develop opportunities and introduce new expertise to ensure that Canada’s research community grows.
NSERC provides Canadian scientists and engineers the means to forge ahead because of their belief in research without borders and overboards.
NSERC Postgraduates Scholarship-Doctoral Eligibility Criteria
Complete eligibility criteria are available on the CGS-D program page (the NSERC PGS D shares eligibility criteria with the CGS D).
However, this additional eligibility criteria is unique to the NSERC PGSD:
- Applicants may take up their PGS D at any eligible Canadian institution. They may also take it up at any eligible foreign institution, provided they have received a previous degree from a Canadian institution.
- If an applicant is offered a CGS D but decides to take the award to an eligible foreign institution, and is eligible to do so, they must decline the CGS D to be offered a PGS D award in its place.
Furthermore;
To be eligible for support from the majority of NSERC’s scholarships and fellowships programs, you must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a protected person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), and for the application deadline date. NSERC can ask for proof of citizenship, residency or protected person status before and while offering funding.
You must not be currently declared ineligible to apply for and hold funding from NSERC, the Canadian research funding organizations for reasons of breaking of standards of ethics or integrity, which includes financial or scientific misconduct.
You must have accounts in good standing with NSERC, including having paid and/or returned any money owed to NSERC. The NSERC is one to take charge of the conditions.
NSERC makes use of the date of degree completion to know your eligibility for some NSERC programs. A date on which all the requirements of your degree have been met, including the successful defence and submission of the corrected copy of your thesis according to your institution’s regulations. This is not the conferred or convocation date.
Criterias for Program of Study in the NSERC Postgraduates Scholarship-Doctoral
An eligible graduate program should come with a significant research component that results to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as one of the requirement for completion of the program.
Joint programs with a professional degree include MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD as well as clinically oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology. All these are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component, as mentioned earlier.
